Intentions (or Listening to Mom)

August 12, 2012

Thank you to my Mom for allowing me to talk about her in this blog (see comments on my August 8, 2012 post). When you talk about your Mom in a blog, you will find you have to listen to her as well. My Mom thinks that the term disability pornography is inappropriate. She then quoted a dictionary definition of pornography that is similar to one of the definitions I found – depiction of erotic behaviour that is meant to elicit sexual excitement. I agree with her that these definitions of pornography do not describe the genre that I have since discovered is also called inspiration porn.

However, I found a third definition of pornography that may apply – “The depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction.”

As Mom said to me – the term pornography is likely used in for it’s shock value. But then the act of using the term is pornography in and of itself.

So what is the purpose of all of this rambling? Well,I will no longer use that term to describe the genre of inspirational photos, captions and stories that some disabled people (including me) find offensive. When it is appropriate, I will describe what I see and why I find it offensive without resorting to terms meant to shock. And that may also turn many readers away from me.

As I’ve said many times, my dream for this blog is that it is a way to build a community of inclusion. So, continue to feel free to challenge me. I won’t always change my mind but I will definitely think about what you have shared.
