disability as diversity

May 7, 2012

“Respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity.”

This is one principle of the United Nations Convention (or treaty) on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. (See below for my source for this information.)

I love this principle but it may take a long time for me and others in our society to be able to truly do this. Our society tends to see persons with disabilities as people with problems that need to be fixed. We may have progressed from thinking that the person with the disability (difference) needs to be fixed to thinking that the physical and attitudinal environment needs to be fixed. However we haven’t progressed to respecting and celebrating persons with disabilities (differences) as reflection of the diversity (rainbow) of humanity.

What are some ways we can respect individuals who remind us of the vibrant, beautiful diversity of humans in our world?
